Encounter Books is a publisher of conservative books. As with all publishers, they send their new offerings to the various prominent news outlets who do book reviews. Note the snippet from the announcement Encounter published today [note: at the time this blog was published there seems to be a problem with the specific link to the announcement, thus I've provided a link to their homepage.]...
I have long been aghast at The New York Times’s treatment of conservative books. By and large, it oscillates between utter neglect and ostentatious contempt. This is frustrating for authors, who have been taught that a review in the Times is the literary, or at least the commercial, equivalent of entry into the Promised Land.In fact, though, the Times matters less and less. This is true across the board at our former Paper of Record, I believe. Its plummeting circulation and ad revenues are objective correlatives of its loss of influence. Fewer and fewer people get their news from The New York Times, and more and more people complain about its political bias, its blurring of editorial comment and reporting, its trivializing embrace of every politically correct, metrosexual trend. On the cultural front, the dumbing-down of the Times’s coverage has been an open scandal for years. Its coverage of books is no exception, and it is with a sense of liberation that I have announced today that Encounter Books will no longer be sending its wares to the Times.
So, what's this got to do with GWB? Thanks for asking.
We've had some discussion over the weekend concerning the NYT's release of the name of the interrogator who chatted with KSM. The Administration asked that his name not be released. As usual, in matters of national security, the NYT chose to put the country at risk. Also, as usual, the Administration has taken no action to punish the Times or find out who leaked the information.
I have suggested that until the Administration takes significant and punitive measures the MSM will continue to operate as the media and intelligence arm of aQ. I suggested a couple of options: first, empanel a federal grand jury and issue subpoenas to the writers and editors (and publisher) of the Times. Ask for their sources of classified information they've published. If they are not forthcoming with names, toss them in jail for the duration of the GJ. And then empanel a new GJ and repeat the process. Second, pull their WH, Pentagon, CIA, etc. press creds. Throw them out onto Pennsylvania Avenue just prior to the next press briefing. Don't let them back in.
In a small way, the good folks at Encounter Books have provided a very nice roadmap for President Bush. And President McCain. Oh that they would follow it.
of the leakers is from the writers/editors/publishers. I suppose you could order up a lie detector test for everyone who had knowledge of the program/event/personnel but that seems a tad ungainly. Also, it would be my guess that they would give up the names after an appropriate time in stir, given that they understood that there would be GJ's empaneled and detention orders issued as long as a R was President.

Just a thought, who says the NYT gets things right ?

I like your idea. Revoke every single one of their passes immediately, then start with the GJ, sounds good to me.

Should this logic have been applied to Novak in the Valerie Plame situation?
No vis Plame for the reasons gc noted.
Yes for their coverage of Joe Wilson & the "16 Words".

given that plame had not been undercover for over 5 years, she was not covered by existing law

And of the leaker turns out to be Richard Armitage, put him in federal prison. And while they are at it, put the Pinch in federal prison too. Same reason. Publishing classified information.
Hey Beck, I absolutely, ABSOLUTELY

am all about pulling their press credentials for the White House, AF1, and everywhere else the Administration has authority to do so.
Impeach the 5 usurpers

And I suppose it is even less likely that a President McCain would do so.
On the other hand, he may actually have a bone to pick with folks who break the law and endanger American intelligence assets and soldiers.
Half holding my breath.
