Jindal speaks about legislative session
The Times-Picayune's coverage:
Jindal admits mistake in not stopping pay raise for lawmakers
In a press conference today, Gov. Bobby Jindal said he "learned his lesson" about dealing with the legislature, meaning he gave them too much leeway. Look for a more activist Gov. Jindal in the future.
The regular session of the legislature ended today. The legislative pay raise measure will become law absent a veto by July 8.

but immature liberals will still villify him for it. (eg. Bush, Iraq intelligence reports, etc. translated into "Bush lied, people died.")
thing he does as governor, then he'll be fine.
Jindal in 2012!
brakes on Louisiana's gravy train for state gov't. My respect for Gov. Jindal hasn't diminished in the least.

I really don't see a problem with this pay raise to begin with. Legislators making only $16,800 is just asking for corruption. Thy shouldn't be made well off from public service, but it should at least be a means of subsistence.
They should have done it incrementally. Doubling the salary at a time when a lot of citizens are feeling the pinch wasn't going to fly, but if they had gone for less (adjusting it a few thousand per year until it caught up to inflation) would have been a better route politically I suspect.

If the demagogues that condemn any and all pay increases as some sort of moral deficiency on the part of those who vote for them hadn't constantly whipped people up in a frenzy every other time a pay adjustment had been considered they could have done that.
It's been 28 years. Legislators even admitted that they didn't act on recommendations by an independent panel for an increase because the report came out in 2003 - an election year. The opponents were probably on the warpath, out to take down anybody that voted for it. BTW, that recommendation was for over $40k in 2003 - more than they even allowed themselves this year.
Just look at the reaction to this bill. While some people have made the considered and reasonable statement that the bill maybe should have gone for a smaller increase - more gradual, etc., the majority of opponents came out with some sort of blanket statement that made any pay increase suspect no matter what the circumstances or the amount or how gradually it was done. People here were saying that Jindal was disgraced just for agreeing to allow the thing - that he was a lib, a RINO, and a big liar.
How exactly do you fight that sort of ridiculousness? You can't - you have to do it anyway and try to cut through the din to explain why it was the right move.
