Barack Obama has already been "Swift-Boated"

You know, one of the funny things about watching the Democrats is their alternation between fear and bravado about whether Republicans will "Swift Boat" their candidate this time around. Orwell once said that "The word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies "something not desirable.'" This is roughly the way the Democrats use the term "Swiftboating" to suggest a political attack of thoroughgoing fraudulence and impropriety concocted out of whole cloth. Never mind that each and every one of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was a combat veteran, including a number of highly decorated veterans; it's casually accepted that they were all liars, knaves and pawns.

But the irony of conducting this discussion in the future tense ignores the fact that, by any reasonable definition, Barack Obama has already been Swift-Boated. A true Swift-Boating proceeds in five predictable stages:

1. The Democrat makes some claim that forms the center of his appeal and convinces his followers on the left that he can reach out to voters in the middle.

Kerry: I served with honor. Thus, you can trust me on national security. Bring it on. That dog won't hunt. Go read Doug Brinkley's book.

Obama: I am a post-racial candidate. I will lead us beyond the age of race-baiting preachers and grievance-mongers. I'm also a religious man who will end the Democrats' secular fixation. Go read The Audacity of Hope.

2. The Democrat's own words are accurately quoted against him, his own actions and associations are turned back on him.

Kerry: The video of his Senate testimony. The Winter Soldier hoaxes he peddled. The Christmas in Cambodia nonsense.

Obama: Rev. Wright, the main who coined "Audacity of Hope," turns out to be just another race-baiting preacher. Obama sneers at other people's faith and has to flee from his own church one step ahead of a bitter gun-toting mob.

3. The Democrat stops answering questions and hopes the media will drop the story.

Kerry: Six weeks where his only interview or press conference was with Jon Stewart.

Obama: Hey, I answered eight questions. Let me eat my waffle. No more debates.

4. The Democrat and his supporters whine and screech about the unfairness of the thing.

Kerry: They questioned my patriotism!

Obama: Racists! Distractions from the Real Issue, which is not my words or my judgment but my...uh....

5. Denial.

Kerry: I'm a strong closer.

Obama: Hey, that was the primaries. Did I mention that John McCain was old?

Where is Tony Bennett when you need him?

"go there" with these 5 specifics too much.
He is proving her erecently that his kid gloves wrt Obama are coming off. I suspect they will come off further in the near future.
However, the heavy punching will have to be left to 527's.
Curiously enough, ABC is giving me a glimmer of hope that Obama will not blatatly get a pass with them. Jake Tapper is on his trail. Let's hope he keeps it up and continues to stoke the fire.

Just a typical, small town, white girl...

once he realizes that he is being attacked without restraint and that the media is in fact biased against him, he will not hesitate to change tactics and go 100%.

He will not be a Bob Dole and spend most of the campaign season mystified by the unfairness of it. McCain is a fighter when he thinks he is being treated unfairly, which is certain to happen.

J on McCain-Obama by Adam C

McCain also thinks Obama is a phony who claims credit for things he didn't do. I think he actually respects Sen. Clinton more. Don't know if that will translate into "rough play" but if Obama makes him mad, he may not hold back.

I think the underlying problem is that McCain wants to win on the issues. I don't think he wants "analysts" discussing how he "only won because of the racist vote" or "the association with Rev. Wright." He wants to have them saying "McCain's vision won over a majority of Americans."

I don't know if that's a good strategy, but I think it's part of his slightly idealized view of how politics should be.

that the Navy guy will fight back hard. He won't leave it all up to 527's, Rush and Gamecock.

restraint could cost him the election, and he will respond in full force.

The guy has had the MSM on his side for years. The winds are about to shift, and McCain is going to be shocked--not intellectually (he knows that its coming), but it will be a shock to him nonetheless.

McCain is a fighter, has a bit of a temper, and will not stand for it.

I think McCain will strike back in disciplined and effective way.

I think the campaign is going to be nasty---much more nasty than the previous two election cycles.

while not holding back.

Obama is like Bill Clinton in this one regard---he can say really false things with a big smile.

Exhibit A: McCain's 100 year plan for Iraq.

NYT as example by Adam C

Remember how the NYT "endorsed" McCain and used it to unload on Rudy. Well, I think we all knew they would end up trashing him eventually. They seem to be on a one-paper effort to make up false stuff and throw it at McCain (it's almost like they want to help him).

Well, the campaign has pushed back pretty solidly and they have a good rapid response going on it. The conf. calls with bloggers are often focused on fighting the MSM's bias. So it seems they realize that past "allies" won't stay that way since he now is Mr. Republican to the press.

When they lay it on with uncredible allegations and innuendo regarding age, lobbyist connections, being a Bush stooge, etc. there will be a tremendous amount of circling the wagons.

People like Rush who will call it as they see it will use the NY as a punching bag.

I am confident McCain will fight back, I just hope he doesn't delay too long in the hopes of running the kind of campaign he wants to run.

Presidents never have the presidencies they really want. They don't get to run the campaigns that the really want. Voters will always bitch and moan about not having the candidates they want (I remember in 2000 after the VP debate people were saying that the tickets should be flipped).

Time to get over all that stuff and make sure that the US does not add a new category titled "extreme leftists" to its roster of Presidents.

It will be a KnownFact by 2010 that he and the GOP ran a completely "racist" campaign! This will be logged along with other MSM KnownFacts like "Bush-lied-people-died!" and the common usages of "McCarthyite" and "SwiftBoat."

this campaign is going to greatly weaken the MSM even further, because when the inattentive great un-washed get attentive, they are going to resent the hell out of being deemed racist for questioning Obama's character as he gets the anal exam all men get when they want to hold the nukes.

simply tell the truth about them.
Look at the best dig the lefties got in on McCain:
Lie about what he said about troops in Iraq.
Clinton lied about the economy in 1992, and lied for 8 years.
Lying is the left's only game.

should be "I've answered, like, eight questions..."

Any pics of Obama windsurfing in Hawaii? Bicycling fashionably?

Come to think of it...are there any pics of Obama playing any sport? No offense to bowlers, but the bowling thing doesn't count.

There's like 20 million pictures of him shooting hoops.

Rudy for President
Someone's got to punch the hippies.

Can't get more American than basketball, especially if he looks good playing.

Actually I was hoping he played cricket or polo with some "foreign leaders".

The Unofficial RedState FAQ
“You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say. ” - Martin Luther

want to portray "Swift-Boating" as a smear on someone's character and integrity, whereas it is really an exposure of someone's lack of character and integrity. I am fine with it if that is what they think swift-boating is about. The real lesson of the swift-boat incident is that no matter how hard they tried, and they tried very hard, the MSM could not get Kerry past this issue.
What I am waiting for is when the media will run some kind of "Macaca" campaign against McCain. They will find some offhand remark and endlessly run it as they did with Allen.

Highly recommended! by redneck hippie

It is correct to try and run a "clean campaign." This has worked for a time. As the opposition gets more and more nasty, McCain will fight hard, I agree with all that.

The true test will be whether John McCain can succeed in gathering the support that he wants on his positions. He realizes that without a strong mandate on his issue positions, his election will be a hollow one.

Obama is succeeding in cloaking his agenda. Therefore we (the good guys) are going to have to man the (swift) boats on character and integrity.

This was a great, great post.
