I heard the following sermon in Church last Sunday in light of the birthday of our Independence today.

Why has God blessed America?

1) Our Nation was founded on the freedom to express the Christian faith. The Mayflower Compact was the first document written. The common purpose of the document was “the advancement of the Christian faith” and God is mentioned four times.

2) Our founding fathers acknowledged God’s authority over us. The Declaration of Independence says our rights come from God. Washington added “so help me God” to the oath of office.

Don't mess with these guys.

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. I found it a little hard to believe and suspected the reporters were not reporting the whole truth. To my great surprise, I discovered I was correct.

So I was clicking around, as is my nighttime wont, and stumbled across this (watch out, salty language). It's a report about an initiative coming up in California that does a lot of stuff... first and foremost, it legalizes pot. Not in a "with a note from your doctor and $100, you can buy a bag from a dispensary" kind of way, but in a "if you sell alcohol, you can sell weed" kind of way.

Independence Day approaches and it is clear that, especially in an election year, all politicians must profess to be patriotic. Some are, and some are not. The thing about patriotism is that it is either in you or it isn't. Patriots who have it, can spot it in others. Patriots live, breathe, and exude patriotism because it is part of their fiber. It becomes part of your fiber when you are taught, beginning as a child, that the root of America's greatness is our freedom. You learn that America has freed millions of people from the grip of tyranny and oppression over our long and storied history. You learn that American freedom still serves as a beacon of hope for billions of people around the world. And while some people may not be proud of our country, Patriots are proud.

Yesterday when Senator Obama went to Independence, Kansas to talk about patriotism, it got me thinking. Now, I imagine there's about 300 million different exact versions of what it means to be a "patriot" in this country. From where I'm standing though, I reckon these 300 million versions can be classified down to two distinct groups, Originalist Patriots and Darwinist Patriots.

An Originalist Patriot is one that believes in the original meaning of our Constitution. An Originalist Patriot is one that jealously guards the God given rights layed down in that precious original document. An Originalist Patriot is one that puts no other document before the Constitution in deciding ANYTHING. When it comes to any sort of "change" in the fundamental meanings layed down therein, an Originalist Patriot demands the change be difficult to accomplish and never knee-jerked into existence.

After the weekend discussion of Wall-E’s liberal/environmental messages, I wanted to expand on a point I made that the movie also contains a number of conservative themes that have been missed by the immediate negative reaction to the environmental themes. I am not going to discuss (or defend) the strong environmental message of the movie. It is what it is. I’m also not going to discuss (or defend) the technical inconsistencies of the movie (e.g. where does their food come from? Why does the probe ship travel to the Axiom in real-space while the Axiom uses hyperdrive to return to Earth). I’m only pointing out conservative themes to balance people’s reactions.

So today was Daddy Day with my boys and I decided we were going to have a wonderful time at the movies with the most important people in my life aside from my wife and my Lord. I thought watching a movie the boys have begged me for months to go see would be an absolute joy. This is only the second movie we've ever gone to at the theater, so I've usually had the benefit of having heard from those who have seen the movies before I go, or rent them and can steer away from the more objectionable ones. “But hey”, I thought, This is a G-rated Movie, created by Pixar and distributed by Disney. I know to be careful with Disney movies because I've seen propaganda passed off as entertainment by them before, but this is a Pixar movie. After all, they made Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Cars, The Incredibles, and so many good clean family movies and I've only found them to slip a left wing dig in on a few occasions so I'm thinking...”Hey...Why worry about it. The Boys want to see it so bad they can taste it. I'll be their hero for the day. It's Pixar and they've got great graphics which I really enjoy because I'm a techno geek at heart and the graphics from the trailers looked incredible beyond belief. So...Why worry.”

...God-fearing homosexuals can't even have a parade in which they dress provocatively (to say the least) and demand that the public watch their lewd sexual acts and displays that would be illegal for heterosexuals to commit in public, without the worry of people actually protesting it?

I mean, Jeez.

The first two paragraphs of the AFP story read:

Tens of thousands joined gay pride marches across Europe on Saturday but homophobics spoiled the party in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria where scores were arrested for disrupting events.

Czech security forces were forced to intervene after right-wing extremists moved in on a parade in the country's second city Brno, leading to 15 arrests as tear gas was thrown, police said.

Not spinning a narrative there, now, are we?

Encounter Books is a publisher of conservative books. As with all publishers, they send their new offerings to the various prominent news outlets who do book reviews. Note the snippet from the announcement Encounter published today [note: at the time this blog was published there seems to be a problem with the specific link to the announcement, thus I've provided a link to their homepage.]...

I have long been aghast at The New York Times’s treatment of conservative books. By and large, it oscillates between utter neglect and ostentatious contempt. This is frustrating for authors, who have been taught that a review in the Times is the literary, or at least the commercial, equivalent of entry into the Promised Land.

Don Imus ended his radio career today with another stupid comment.

In December, when he returned to the radio after an eight month hiatus, he told his audience:

“I will never say anything in my lifetime that will make any of these young women at Rutgers regret or feel foolish that they accepted my apology and forgave me,” Mr. Imus told an audience that was listening in person at Town Hall in midtown Manhattan, and at home and in their cars on WABC-AM, his new radio home. “And no one else will say anything on my program that will make anyone think I did not deserve a second chance.”

One would assume that everyone wants to see that our kids get the best education possible. I mean, who could possibly be against kids getting the best opportunities? Well, apparently the one entity that you'd expect to really care about kids is the one standing in the way of their education: teachers. Sadly, it is obvious that teachers as a group don't care a whit about kids, at least as far as their union is concerned.
