Three interesting endorsements today:

Florida Gov Charlie Crist endorses Senator John McCain.

Liz Cheney Perry endorses Mitt Romney.

Senator Ted Kennedy endorses Barak Obama (reported on CNN).

What does it mean? My hunch is that Gov Crist thinks he could be on McCain's VP short list, Mrs. Perry is in the ABMcC camp possibly for the same reason I am, and Senator Kennedy wants his brother back.

Bob Hahn points out that he predicted the Kennedy endorsement based on Caroline Kennedy's endorsement yesterday, which was a set up. We might speculate that Mrs. Perry's endorsement indicates something similar--no, not from her father. Think about it.

Since all this is pure conjecture straight from my crystal ball, let's make this an open thread for other opinions on the endorsements and what they mean, if anything.

While all of us who read here are interested and keep up with daily politics, I do think that we are in the minority. The reason McCain is popular is that people really do want the two parties to work together. I have heard many people say that the GOP is too tied to corporations and that the Dems are too tied to labor unions and the middle is forgotten.
While we debate McCain-Feingold (which is bad) the average Joe could care less about it. Most are looking for a decent living for their families, a protected country and less bickering as good or bad as it may be. While I'm not real excited about our candidates, it is the hand we are left with and if Senator McCain is the nominee, I will gladly pull the lever for him to keep Hillary or Obama from the White House.

Former Reagan Chief of Staff Howard Baker has endorsed John McCain. (He is a former honorary national chair for Thompson.)

Not surprising. by NightTwister

I don't know that I expected it, but it's a good fit.

Howard Baker Endorsement by Conservative Tennessean

Former Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. just endorsed John McCain for President. The Baker endorsement will definitely help McCain in Tennnessee and may help him among older conservative voters throughout the South.

Senator Baker has a long history of service to our nation as Senator from Tennessee, Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate, Chief of Staff to President Ronald Reagan, and most recently as U.S. Ambassador to Japan. He served as Honorary National Chair to Fred Thompson's campaign for president.

Senator Baker is Fred Thompson's mentor and one of his closest friends. Baker is the man that launched Fred's political career by placing the young Fred Thompson on the Watergate committee. Fred even supported Baker over Ronald Reagan during the 1980 Republican primary.

As with most of the Fredheads out there, it has been a struggle to choose between McCain and Romney. In my opinion, neither have a record of being a consistent conservative. Fred Thompson's advisers and supporters appear to have split between Romney and McCain.

The big question is whether Fred will follow Howard Baker's lead and endorse John McCain?

Congrats to McCain!

I really respect Howard

Baker's a good one. Congrats to McCain.

Envisioning when all that is Left is the Right.

Something I havent heard mentioned anywhere is that Republicans will lose another seat if McCain is elected President. Maybe it doesn't matter because if this RINO is not nominated he will probably vote with the Democrats in the next Senate anyway.

If McCain is elected President, Governor Janet Napolitano of Arizona will surely appoint a Democtrat to fill out McCain's term until 2010. With the Republicans slated to lose 5 or 6 Senate seats this year, can we afford to throw McCains Arizona seat to an appointed Democrat?

At least get your facts right if you're going to attack a candidate.

I thank Adam C. for pointing out that Arizona law (along with Alaska and Hawaii) require the Governor to appoint a member of the same party as the retiring Senator in case of a vacancy (Utah and Wyoming require the governor to select an interim senator from a list of three candidates proposed by the state
central committee of the political party with which the previous incumbent was affiliated). I might wonder what kind of Republican Janet Napolitano might appoint to the Senate in the unlikely event of Senator McCain's election as President.

I don't feel that I was attacking Senator McCain by calling him a RINO. Anyone familiar with the Senator's activities and policies over the years would come to the same conclusion. The reason McCain is such a media darling is precisely because he is a RINO.

Why is it that when a politicians record is exposed its considered an attack?

I might wonder what kind of Republican Janet Napolitano might appoint to the Senate in the unlikely event of Senator McCain's election as President.

This is pure speculation on my part, as I don't know the particulars of AZ election law, but generally the way it is done in other states with this sort of law is that the state party picks an appointee who is then rubber-stamped by the Gov. AZ probably works the same way.

Anyone but Clinton by liberalredneck01

Im sick and tired of this 90's nostalgic crap! It is time for America to move beyond the Clintons!

Obama or McCain '08!

In my opinion Gov. Crist's endorsement tightens up the FL race a bit in McCain's direction. Before this move Romney was trending ahead in most polls and it was looking like he was headed to a solid 4-5 point victory. This move likely makes it a 1-2pt win either way.
However, if former Gov Jeb Bush would endorse Romney as he has behind closed doors it would shift it back towards Mitt in a big way. Not to mention the implications nationally.

More evidence of McCain's anti-market, anti-base extremism.

I mean, Crist even brought Robert Kennedy in to be his keynote speaker at a global warming summit last summer. Awful.

http://www.dep.state.fl.us/ClimateChange/news/archive/0620.htm

And from CEI:

Despite not understanding the science, Crist decided to “do something” about climate change by signing three executive orders . The first order requires the state government to reduce their total greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2025. The second order forces electrical utilities to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to 2000 levels by 2017, to 1990 levels by 2025, and 20 percent below 1990 by 2050. The order also adopted California 's carbon dioxide motor vehicle standard, which requires a 22 percent reduction in vehicle emissions by 2012 and a 30 percent reduction by 2016. This incredibly ambitious executive order also requires consumer appliances to be more energy-efficient and electricity companies to use renewable energy to produce 20 percent of the electricity in Florida by 2020. The third order creates a partnership between Florida and England and Germany to allow Britons and Germans to come to Florida on vacation - oops, to “discuss and promote initiatives that broaden the Kyoto Protocol and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases beyond 2012.” There has been no word on whether the Governor's regulation through executive orders actually carries the weight of law. Stay tuned.
