FNC and others report

By Ben Domenech Posted in | Comments (68) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

In less than an hour, we went from the NY Times reporting the charges that NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer was involved in a prostitution ring to apparent confirmation that he will resign at a news conference to be held momentarily.

We'll add updates to this post as events warrant.

Update: If watching this play out on TV ain't fun enough for ya, take a tour through the cache of the Emperor's Club VIP website. They have gift certificates. The Smoking Gun has the Victoria Secretesque images.

What are the chances.... by St. Louis Conservative

...that this thing blows over in a few days and is dismissed as a "private matter for he and his family", and that all this attention is a "mean-spirited invasion of his private life".

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

I don't think so. They apparently have text messages and cell phone records. This is going to be a nice, long story.

I figure it will be too. by St. Louis Conservative

I was just illustrating absurdity by being absurd. Whenever Republicans are involved in stuff like this, it seems like the media will figure out a way to keep the story going for months on end, especially if it's an election year (ala Mark Foley).

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

Then he would have little to worry about, even if there was a body count.

Spitzer is just too goody-goody to survive this. He has always run on platforms of "squeaky-clean."

First, Spitzer's aides conducted an improper investigation of New York's State Senate Majority Leader (a Republican).

Now, Spitzer himself is caught buying "services."

How could he not give a blind black man (Lt Gov. David Paterson) a chance to be Governor.

Of course .... just wait for the free-for-all when the rest of the callers to the prostitution ring are released.

It won't blow over. The by Young Conservative

It won't blow over. The media needs something to cover and there's 6 weeks left until the next primary. And they'll never admit it, but if there's anything Americans follow well, its a good sex scandal.

That's why Mark Foley (explicit messages to House pages)resigned and William Jefferson (money in the freezer) stayed around.

Dear God...

I' having trouble believing this is true.

Who in their right mind would do something this stupid? This is even more stupid and reckless then Clinton having sex with Monica. At least that was legal until he lied about it.

"I ain't never votin' fo another Democrat so long as I can draw breath! I'll vote for a dog first!" - Leola Thomas

but sleeping with a subordinate when you hold a position of power is highly unethical.

When people say that Clinton was impeached for a blowjob, my response is always, "If Clinton was an officer in the military sleeping with an enlisted aide he would have lost rank in a best case scenario. He might have gone through less hearings, because they probably would have just kicked him out. And it wasn't just one aide; there were several others involved. What would you think if your boss was caught forcing himself onto your coworkers?"

But A. The Presidency isn't a military position, B. HUGE difference between unethical and illegal.

As far as I'm concerned, politicians can sleep with as many of their legal-age interns as they want, and the voters are free to punish it if they don't approve.

Lying under oath and being part of an illegal prostitution ring, however, are very different things.

The relationship exists in corporate America too...not just the military. Ask anyone about their sexual harassment policy at work. Sex is considered a no-no among bosses and their employees. It creates situations.

Perhaps, but that's their rules, it's not the same thing as an elected official.

He can be impeached or he can be fired when he comes up for election. Or he can voluntarily resign. But as far as I'm concerned, that's the end of it.

It is their rules by simpson316

because it is a reaction to prior lawsuits. Corporations put those rules in place because someone won a lawsuit that included each particular situation.

Have you been to a casino recently, for example? Go to a big casino like Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on a Friday or Saturday night and watch some of the people there gamble (my mother met Joy Behar there playing the slots one night.) You'll find people throwing hundreds of thousands of dollars away, 10 and 15 thousand dollars at a time, without batting an eyelash or even really drinking their drinks.

It's a competition -- sports stars and musicians have been known to drop coin in the six figures a night at strip clubs. The money means nothing to them -- it's the atmosphere and the exclusivity they pay for, just as people always have. People who can afford to lose $100,000 in an hour of gambling without breaking a sweat wouldn't worry about spending $5,500 an hour for a hooker.

I am still up a couple hundred bucks. I can't relate.

I'm like you... by kowalski

I've been to casinos maybe a grand total of seven or eight times in my life as a player and I'm a few hundred bucks ahead, all because of the one night in Atlantic City that I hit for $2,400 on a .50 slot machine with the last 5 bucks I had. The total sum I've gambled is less than $5,000. Not my bag.

Bill Clinton had a big hand in opening the Mohegan Sun casino and it's really quite a spectacle. I cannot conceive of putting $50,000 in chips on a table and losing it in the space of 5 minutes, but I've watched it happen several times, and the people who do it almost universally don't get angry when they lose, they just come back later or try a different game. Astonishing.

Some info by Adam C

First, the Gov's statement didn't include a resignation so far.

Second, if he resigns, the Lt Governor (Paterson) would take over until 2010.

Third, did someone say GOV Rudy in 2010? Well they should.

Great point on Rudy. by shooflyguy68

The fact that he didn't really get beat up in the GOP primary just makes him a stronger contender than he already was. Any chance he's interested?

Rudy's talents would be wasted as Governor. He'd be better off as Sec. of State or U.N. Ambassador in a McCain administration.

No disrespect to John Bolton, who did great work in that office, all he could do, but the office is trivial to the needs of the nation.

You are right and wrong.

It's trivial to the needs of the nation in the sense that the nation will gain very little, if anything, from the UN. It is NOT trivial in the sense that the UN can do a GREAT deal of harm to some causes dear to the US, and if left without a strong US influence ultimately will do great harm to the US.

Rudy has the same ability as Bolton in his fearlessness and knowledge about how to be a tough negotiator. He'd be a big asset at the UN.

That said, I do think he'd be better suited as Secretary of State.

what party is Spitzer? by generalgrant

The NY Times doesn't mention until the 9th paragraph that the guy is a Democrat. If the scandal involved a Republican, like say "Rick Renzi, Republican of Arizona" the Times would be sure to mention his party right away.

Should anyone run into something similar in the future, get a screenshot of it right away, and send to NewsBusters.org

Vista comes with a tool for grabbing screens and turning them into JPEGs.

Democrat Sex Scandals by generalgrant

Why should he resign? Being involved in a sex scandal is usually a badge of honor for Democrats. Heck, his approval ratings among Dems will probably improve, especially if he starts accusing the VRWC and Republican Smear Machine for making him go to expensive prostitutes.

...for Democrats.

“.....women and minorities hardest hit”

This is the breaking news you hope you hear...a Democrat hypocrisy in the face of the voters in an election year....Mr I am going to give illegals driver's licenses Spitzer being indicted....I swear I came back from a meeting and checked this site and thought I was having a dream but it's even better it's real!!! whoo hoo.

Freedom of Religion not Freedom from Religion

The bad news is that Paterson makes Spitzer look like Rush Limbaugh. The good news is that he will so horrify even New Yorkers, that the odds of a GOP win in 2010 go up significantly.

FINALLY, a Democrat sex scandal! Geez...

When are the house and state senate elections in New York? Hopefully we can place this burden around the waist of Democratic candidates in down-ticket races?

Two year terms by reldim

All legislators serve two-year terms. We elect in all even0numbered years. Spitzer is already on record for a public push to switch the Senate to Democrat control. I would prefer he stay around - it'll be easier to remind people that we shouldn't necessarily be so quick to give the Governor what he wants.

The other side of it is that nobody knows Patterson from Adam. Lt. Govs in NY are non-entities as they have about as many constitutional duties as the U.S. Vice President. I do not think that Spitzer has given Patterson any significant responsibility, and his last job was as Senate minority leader - a position with possibly even less responsibility than Lt. Gov. (the houses of the Legislature are entirely creatures of the majority and work with virtually no input from the minority caucus). So his status as an unknown is probably a selling point - do we really want a blank check given to a guy we barely paid any attention to and whose biggest recommendation is that a guy who might resign in disgrace thought he was right for the job?

The last time the Lt. Gov. mattered was when Nelson Rockefeller stepped down. That was over 30 years ago. And the guy in question got trounced in the next general election even though he had served as Lt. Gov. for 15 years prior to assuming the Governor's chair.

I have finally found joy in living in NY.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

If he has been indicted in the Southern District of New York, shouldn't he be doing the same perp walk he orchestrated on high profile white collar criminals.

Culture of corrup...

I'm still waiting for Sen.Vitter to do the same. Prostitution is illegal everywhere but a few counties in Nevada. Government officials should not be breaking the law.

Federal Crime? by shooflyguy68

I just read the NYT website. It seems that because the ladies were transported across state lines for the purposes of prostitution, Spitzer may have violated the Mann act. Does anyone know what the penalties for this federal crime are?

It's 5 years max and/or a fine. I don't have a number on the fine - I suspect it is on par with other federal offenses that carry a similar possible jail sentence.

Why during all these press conferences for these kind of things, the wives are sitting there supportive? Maybe I just know different kinds of women, but if that was me who pulled that, I would potentially be missing a body part that was used in my infedelity.

For once I'd like to see these women pack their bags and head out.

Man is free at the moment he wishes to be. --Voltaire

If Spitzer resigns it leaves a permanent vacancy in the Lt. Gov.'s office. There is no provision in the Constitution or in state law for a replacement to be either appointed or elected before the next regularly scheduled election (2010). So, Democrats would need 2 seats to win back the Senate. They would not have Patterson's tie-breaking vote available to them so a 31-31 tie would result in "power-sharing" and not a Democrat majority.

This would also put Joe Bruno - Republican Senate leader as next in line should Patterson vacate the office before the next election.
