Apropos of Leon's post on the tyranny of Robert Mugabe's Zimbabwean regime comes this story of events from our Western overnight:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Zimbabwe police stopped and detained U.S. and British embassy staff, slashing the tires of the cars they were traveling in, on Thursday in a move the U.S. ambassador blamed on the southern African country's government.
"Police put up a roadblock, stopped the vehicles, slashed the tires, reached in and grabbed telephones from my personnel, and the war veterans (Mugabe's supporters) threatened to burn the vehicles with my people inside unless they got out and accompanied police to a station nearby," U.S. Ambassador James McGee said in an interview on CNN.
"We do believe this is coming directly from the top," he said.
And, from the AP:
Paul Engelstad, spokesman for the U.S. Embassy, says a U.S. Embassy staffer was beaten and tires of cars in the convoy were slashed.
Engelstad says the group was still being detained at a roadblock in rural Zimbabwe.
He says U.S. Ambassador James McGee, who did not go on the trip, was pressing Zimbabwean officials to release them.

I have an idea about how we could improve Zimbabwe if we do.
Ever since he lost the election, Mugabe has been constantly testing, step-by-step, whether any outside nations would hold him to account or would just look the other way. He escalated slowly, first discovering that no one would hold his election commission to a reasonable time limit, nor would oppose the court's abrogation of election procedures, nor would the violations of the constitution to delay the run-off and prevent elected officials from taking office.
Nor has anyone done anything while tens of thousands are being systematically attacked, killed, starved and the political opposition exterminated. And now all foreign observers are being forced out.
In light of past inaction, Mugabe has now been emboldened to attack U.S. and British embasssy staff members to prevent them from carrying out their duties.
In the old days, such an attack in violation of international law and traditions dating from the dawn of civilization would rightfully been viewed as an act of war and would have been responded to in such fashion. But we haven't stood up in Iran and elsewhere to attacks on our embassies, so Mugabe is wagering that we won't stand up now. Which will only lead to worse behavior on his part and others of his ilk.
Indeed we already see the script; Mugabe is brazenly operating with no attempt to cover up his plans. We're going to have a rump election on June 27th followed by thousands of murders of anyone who could rebuild the nation so that the only leadership left in the country are those with blood on their hands. And an utter destruction of any trace of an economy that is not operated by criminal (governmental or non-governmental) elements.
The tragedy is that a minimal show of force by the U.S. or Europe, or even South Africa, early on would have brought down Mugabe as his henchman left the sinking ship like rats to get the best deal for themselves they could.
It's the silence that is damnable.
Why isn't a Marine contingent already on it's way there? Why do we have to put up with this sort of garbage...
Furious activity is no substitute for understanding.

Zimbabwe: Catholic clergy targeted
CISA, May 29, 2008
Many Catholic priests and laity are on the list of persons targeted by soldiers and pro-state militia groups in President Robert Mugabe’s clampdown on perceived opposition sympathisers. Many of the priests and Christians have been forced into hiding following death threats, a Zimbabwean priest, who must remain anonymous for reasons of his own security, told the Germany-based international Catholic pastoral charity, Aid to the Church in Need.
Grave human rights abuses are continuing ahead of the presidential run-off on June 27. In rural areas especially, people who had voted for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change have been kidnapped, tortured, maimed and raped by soldiers and militia groups, the priest said ... The food distribution system in the famine-stricken nation is likewise being manipulated by the state. Members of the opposition get no food, and Catholic dioceses are not allowed to distribute any food to help the hungry.
"Austere, intolerant, well-armed, and blood-thirsty, in their own regions the Wahhabis are a distinct factor which must be taken into account" - Winston Churchill, 1921

Mugabe continues to be a hero to black Africa, for exactly the same reason that Reverend Wright and Farrakhan continue to be heroes to African-Americans: They stick it to the white man.
