Update:
Breibart is channeling ol' haystack this morning, informing us that the "Carter-Hamas meeting achieved nothing."
Funny, I think I suggested as much 24 hours prior...seems the Palestinians who WANT to find a peaceful solution and live agree with my analysis:
Last week's meeting between former US president Jimmy Carter and the exiled leader of Hamas militants did not produce any results, Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Malki said here Wednesday.
"President Carter came to the region thinking he could achieve something. Unfortunately president Carter left without anything concrete," he told a conference in the Spanish capital.
"The only thing he achieved was permission on the part of Khaled Meshaal of Hamas to deliver a letter from a detained Israeli soldier to his family. Nothing else," he said.
"Hamas offered nothing to president Carter. They reiterated the same positions. There was no change on the part of Hamas," Malki added.
Yeah, Jimmy-we know-they were duly elected and therefore they must be respected. We know we're not supposed to convolute that with whether blowing themselves and their neighbors up to actually GET those votes ever really had anything to do with it.
My original post in full, below the fold...
It starts with Al Jazeera's downright "glee" over Jimmy Carter's bird flipping gesture as he spoke truth to power (sorta) by doing exactly that which he was explicitly told not to do. Of course, the former really bad President got the obligatory pat on the back from the unbiased Al Jaz gang for doing the right thing while we, here at home, remain too stupid to know any better (apparently):
Carter had met a Hamas delegation in Cairo on Thursday, as well as Husni Mubarak, the Egyptian president.
Carter defended his meetings, calling them necessary in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. He described Israel's siege of the Gaza Strip as a crime.
He said Palestinians in Gaza were being "starved to death", receiving fewer calories a day than people in the poorest parts of Africa.
Carter said that US attempts to undermine Hamas, democratically elected into power in January 2006, have been counterproductive.
Necessary in the peace process? Jimmy Carter is a private citizen...what the bloody hell does he have to do with the peace process these many years AFTER his own miserable failures at getting a peace settlement and winning his bonny little Peace Prize? Remind me...how successful WAS he again in negotiating with the terrorists who now RUN Iran, back when he actually HAD the full weight and power of the United States of America behind him? Yeah-that's how I remember it too, but I digress...
It occurs to me that this 84 year old man is doing his tryouts for Secretary of State in an Obama Administration. Really...think about what Barry says he'll do to win back the hearts and minds of the global community..and what the "elder statesman" from Georgia is up to right now. These two pacifists clearly don't align with Hillary's gleeful promise to obliterate Iran. No...this is the Barry and Jimmy show right here...and Carter is just getting warmed up. Before he gives away the house, consider what he accomplished with his little Pelosi-esque shuttle diplomacy.
First, he said Hamas might accept the right of Israel to exist. THEN, he said that Hamas WAS willing to accept the right of Israel to live as a neighbor. A couple hours later, this seemed to have been corroborated in a Reuters piece, only to have been squashed a few short minutes after that when CNN told us just the opposite - "No plan to recognize Israel."
Hunh...
This IS the diplomacy of the Carter years...strike accords with Arabs who never have any intentions of living up to them to begin with...but ever-grateful for a little air time in the world media all the same..thank you very much. Yeah-good times Jimmy, good times. And Barry, of course, will likely applaud Jimmy's "progress toward peace" by continuing to call Israel "criminals" and lamenting the plight of people who CONTINUE to choose blowing themselves up over working out differences as civilized men like Iraq is trying to do.
The "New" Democrat diplomacy indeed.

Freedom of Religion not Freedom from Religion
Don't you mean Freedom of AND from religion? Religion is not required to be an American last I checked. Your inference is that it is.
We regulars fail to see what your defensive posture about whether being an atheist means you are not an American actually HAS to do with Carter sucking 30 years ago and sucking still...can you bridge that understanding gap for us? Or perhaps you might consider writing a diary about it..and keeping that issue OUT of a thread about Democrats and a failed Foreign Policy that they are trying to re-introduce in the modern-day...
thanks...

That's his first comment.
He signed up in order to leave a comment complaining about someone else's sig.
Why not sign up in order to start a diary? Heck, sign up and leave a "WHAT THE HECK?" essay in the "Are homosexuals gay?" diary!
But no! Create an account to complain about someone else's sig!
Idiocy.

Wow. You guys are a sensitive lot. I'm so sorry to disturb your flow here. My bad. Sorry to insult anyone's sig sensibilities as that was not my intent. Sometimes my knee jerks too fast. But for the record, Carter was dead on about several issues that are not open to revisionist interpretations. If the solar panels Mr. Carter had put on the roof of the White House and his energy policy would have been left in place, oil addiction and its assorted afflictions wouldn't be the drain on your wallet that it has become. Turns out his warning about our energy habits 30 years ago was right on the money. You can't rewrite that little part of history. Its on record on tape and our ignoring of the warning is now right in our collective face. As far as his current trip is concerned, the conflict in the Middle East is all about tension between religious groups. This is all about relationships. We create ignorance through poor communication (case in point my first post here). Misunderstanding begins in the microcosm, between two people. It creates fear and fear creates violence. When you act with violence and anger, you only create more violence and anger. Mr. Carter is an agent for communication, nothing more nothing less. His past position gives him the clout on the world stage to attempt to foster communication regardless of what any of us in his native country personally feel about him. Now tell me how in the hell trying to get people who want to kill each other to sit down and talk about not killing each other is a bad thing? You've got to have one sick perspective on humanity to think that is not a good idea.
My personal barometer on that is reading negative pressure. Carter would never become the Secretary of State under an Obama Administration -- he's officially out of government.
My guess is that Obama will make someone more closely affiliated with Michael Moore SecState, an up and coming international socialist, not a dying and increasingly irrelevant -ex President. Carter just doesn't have the mojo to move the world any longer. Someone in Laura Rozen's circle from Mother Jones would probably be a better guess.

but Carter seems to be trying out Barry's "negotiate with enemies to make them like us" approach and preparing to hand off trip notes to whomever Obama DOES pick...perhaps your suggested group will bear such a person...

After living through the Carter Administration, I can say with authority that he never DID have the mojo to "move the world".

He is desperate to leave a legacy other then the one he previously forged, and thinks foolishly he can bring peace between Israel and their neighbors. He is simply foolish...

And hmmm the only Arab countries with a formal peace treaties with Israel are ... Egypt (Carter) and Jordan (Clinton).
Carter is being congratulated on all the left-wing blogs.
They do make one point that Bush has refused to face up to:
The Bush Administration had decided to fight the War on Terror by demanding popular, democratically elected governments in the Middle East. Bush has been claiming that the U.S. is fighting in Iraq to help establish just such a "democracy" there. Well, HAMAS was elected by the Palestinians in a free and fair election. So how can Bush refuse to deal with them?
The answer, of course, for the rest of us, is that by "democratic" we don't mean an Islamist regime that rules by violence, even if that regime was freely elected. But Bush simply refuses to discuss the antidemocratic nature of Islamism, and so here we are.
Is choosing to live under a government that doesn't tolerate freedom really living free? Its a tough subject. Yes they "freely" elected Hamas (because Hamas threatened to kill them if they didn't) but thats ok because they voted "freely" right? I don't know. Yes they could have elected someone else more friendly to Israel and the US but maybe they truly do want to live under a government that can barley feed its people.

Entirely.
1. Hamas is a terrorist organization. Period. No argument.
2. The "Palestinians" elect Hamas to represent them.
3. Hamas, after the election, is no different in terms of them being a terrorist organization than they were before.
4. If, in fact, they were elected in a free election and were not coersed by threats of violence, we should probably send Mr. Buffy to Gasa and bomb it to rubble.
5. Bottom line: terrorist organizations and their supporters should be targeted and killed by military action whereever and whenever possible.

He is a dolt - pure and simple (wish I had $50 for every time I wrote that smelly little comment).
In fact, this self-enamored bumpkin verges upon besmirching the well deserved, bottom-feeding reputation of doltishness, as well as far less accomplished world class dolts than he.
Private citizen, eh? Aren't there sanctions for private interference with official government positions/operations? Especially when they become borderline representative of the USG?
This guy's ego is unrestrained. Pity; since his mental dysfunctions seem long ago to have over soaked his intellectual 'Depends'; and may soon overshadow his his record abysmal performance in the Oval Office (supposing that is possible).
Private citizen Jemmeh, eh? Okay. Since this dolt refuses to conduct himself in the fashion of former out-of-office presidents, whaddya say we try these prophylaxises against future peanut penetrations of the functions of current government:
1) Withdraw his Secret Service Support.
2) Reduce or discontinue his Presidential retirement - and ALL perks accompanying his status of an ex-president.
3) Cancel - forever - his bloody Passport.
4) Cancel all his security clearances, and forbid him entrance to all government or government-supported facilities - including his own 12- volume Presidential Library.
5) Finally, send him off to Condaleeza for the spanking he never received at home.
Somehow, somehow we MUST get this Moonbat (I love that word)out of the public domain.

Now that's a funny mental image.

He was the first of many Dems I have been more than proud to vote against.
I wish I could do it again. Too bad.

So it's YOUR mistake I had to correct in 1980.
At least you learned your lesson.
I can still remember my mother asking me if I "wanted to get drafted" because I voted for Reagan.

I'll cut you some slack since you were most likely exercising your right to vote for president for the very first time. We all can't be perfect the first go round.

first vote, 18, rebellious, ill-informed.
Guilty. I DID learn my lesson though. Everything a Democrat promises you?...be sure to expect the opposite in return for that vote.

I, however, got it right the first time. I elected "W" on my 20th birthday. I think my vote for his reelection got thrown out by the all powerful D's of Washington state, since I cast that ballot from Iraq. I'm proud to support Big Mac this year. As much as I like President Bush, having been an active duty Marine, I look forward to electing a real veteran rather than a reservist.
for your service...
and we agree-I have issues with his politics, but I will gladly pull the lever for McC in November.

I believe that he is being vocal about global warming now only so he is in a position to bring down the Branch Gore-vidians from within as more scientists speak out against it. Makes him look flexible and objective, as though he's the one guy in Washington who listens to scientists.
