Posted at 4:09pm on May 5, 2008 "Pro-Life" Kansan Leadership Hopes to Kill Real Pro-Life Legislation

By Erick

Kansas is a very pro-life state. And Kansas has pro-life Republican leaders in the state's General Assembly. But, those pro-life leaders are not actually committed to the pro-life cause -- they just like to call themselves "pro-life."

The legislature adjourns tomorrow and if the residents of Kansas don't act today or in the morning, the legislature might fail to pass the Comprehensive Abortion Reform Act ("CARA").

The legislation would clean up fraud and abuse in the Kansas abortion industry. It would require abortion clinics to report cases of child abuse and incest. Likewise, it would require full disclosure of the risks of abortions before one can be had, as well as giving women the option of hearing the child's heart beat before choosing to kill the child.

Governor Kathleen Sibelius vetoed the original CARA, but when the Senate held the veto over-ride, a key Senator was not in town that day. The Senate President held the veto over-ride in bad faith, knowing that it would fail.

The sponsor re-drafted the legislation to meet the Governor's concerns and the pro-life coalition in the Kansas legislature is working to get it passed.

Standing in the way are House Speaker Melvin Neufeld, Senate President Steve Morris, and Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt.

If you live in Kansas you can and should take advantage of Kansans for Life's action center and demand passage of the CARA.

Or, you could just call 1-785-296-0111 and demand to speak to Melvin Neufeld, Steve Morris, and Derek Schmidt. Tell them to either pass CARA or stop calling themselves "pro-life."

Posted at 10:43am on Apr. 17, 2008 KS-02 Republican Lynn Jenkins Wants to Raise Social Security Taxes

By kansasconservative1

In the article that appeared in The Hill yesterday about the brand new poll showing Jim Ryun with a commanding lead over his primary opponent Lynn Jenkins (50-34), we couldn't but notice a strange quote from Ryun's campaign manager Kyle Robertson:

“It’s obvious that Lynn Jenkins will use dirty tactics to avoid discussing her latest plan to raise taxes on Social Security.”

First, we don't agree with Robertson that this poll shows anything negative for Ryun- though we'd like to see his numbers much higher. This was, however, the first time we had heard the Ryun campaign talk about what all of the Republicans in the Kansas 2nd are talking about: Lynn Jenkins' plan to raise Social Security withholding taxes.

Jenkins' has been saying for weeks that the best way to fix Social Security is to do at the federal level what Kansas did (under her leadership as State Treasurer) to KPERS- the Kansas state government retirement system. Jenkins actually lead the charge to increase withholdings from employee paychecks. Now she says that's exactly how we should "save Social Security"- more taxes.

Don't believe us? We've got video to prove it:

Posted at 11:13pm on Aug. 6, 2007 Snakes in the Kansas Grass

By Erick

The Kansas Progress has an important post you all should read.

The Kansas Republican Party recently voted 82-60 that they have "no confidence" in Steve Cloud of Lenexa, KS. He's one of Kansas's Republican National Committeemen.

Cloud is a member of the "Kansas Traditional Republican Majority," ("KTRM") which is not a traditional values group, no, it supports a traditional Republican majority that is liberal, pro-abortion, and in favor of taxes. Cloud apparently event encouraged people to send money to KTRM and avoid sending money to the evil rightwingers at the Kansas Republican Party.

As Kansas Progress notes, Cindy Neighbors, a liberal Republican, lost a bid for re-election to pro-life Republican Mary Pilcher Cook in 2004. How did Cloud take the news? He said

The bad news is that people like Cindy Neighbor lost and people like Rob Boyer lost. Those are shining stars in the Republican Party, and the conservatives beat them, and that's a travesty."

FWIW, Cindy Neighbors, once a liberal, tax and spend, pro-choice Republican, is now a Democrat.

Conservatives need to keep a sharp eye out for snakes in the grass like Steve Cloud. No doubt he's supporting Lynn Jenkins in KS-02.

Posted at 7:54pm on Jun. 12, 2007 Lynn Jenkins Taxes

By Erick

Good for Club For Growth getting out there early. Lynn Jenkins, the underfunded tax hiking Treasurer from Holton, is making a go at the Republican nomination for Kansas-2, the seat Jim Ryun narrowly lost to Nancy Boyda last year. Ryun himself is trying to make a come back, and he odds are in his favor.

Jenkins has gone so far as to label Ryun a, dare I even use this word on the front page, a . . . conservative! She says he's out of touch with the district he represented for multiple terms. Well, the Club has fired its first shot in the race and it's a good one using Lynn Jenkins' own record against her.

Posted at 11:27am on May 7, 2007 KS-2: Nancy 'Slacker' Boyda?

By Stay Red Kansas

ImageEarlier this year, www.stayredkansas.com discussed Nancy Boyda’s ‘refusal’ of the national Democratic Party’s ‘frontline’ aid, designed at protecting vulnerable freshmen incumbents.

Shortly after Boyda ceremoniously proclaimed her rejection of the aid, it became known to Stay Red that Nancy actually wasn’t even considered for the assistance – her name was left off of the list of targeted incumbents!

In the time since, Stay Red has tried to piece together exactly why Nancy Boyda was not included in the D.C.C.C.’s front-line program. After reviewing a memo from Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen, we’ve discovered exactly why.

Posted at 10:18am on Apr. 18, 2007 Them Targetted Dems

By Erick

How are the Freshman Democrat Blue Dogs doing? These are the men and women who beat Republicans in Republican leaning seats and promised to be Republicans without the corruption. Well, Robert Novak has a report card.

Thus far, Gabrielle Giffords, Harry Mitchell, Joe Donnelly, Brad Ellsworth, Nancy Boyda, Heath Shuler, Charlie Wilson, Chris Carney, Jason Altmire, and Nick Lampson have disappointed. In fact, Lampson failed to vote on either the GOP proposed budget or the Democrat budget. And sadly, Gabrielle Giffords, Nancy Boyda, Chris Carney, and Jason Altmire voted in lock step with the Democrats from embryo killing research to eliminating the secret ballot in the workplace.

Chris Carney, whose district gave Bush 60% of its vote and Nick Lampson whose district gave Bush 64% of its vote have both voted in lock step with Nancy Pelosi on every issue, other than Lampson bailing on budget votes.

As Robert Novak notes

By winning a term in 2006 to represent a Republican district, each of the Democratic moderate freshmen earned two years to convince GOP voters that Democrats can look after their interests just as well as Republicans. But to the extent that each votes and thinks Democratic, each also risks a short career that could be over as soon as 2008.

Posted at 8:38pm on Apr. 16, 2007 KS-2: Boyda Gets Blown Away

By Stay Red Kansas

For the last few months, Stay Red has covered the impending Second Congressional District Primary, paying little attention to the re-electability of incumbent Nancy Boyda.

Last week, Stay Red discussed the filing of Jim Ryun’s quarterly donation report, which showed around 250K raised during the previous three months. Much of that is easy money – this much we know. That said, it was a very solid report nonetheless.

No doubt, there was a vast amount of strategy behind Ryun’s filing.

First, the Ryuns wanted to potentially ward off a challenge from Lynn Jenkins – this was unsuccessful as Jenkins officially announced her candidacy last week.

Posted at 9:01am on Apr. 9, 2007 'Roe' Joins Anti-Tiller Abortion Crusade

By Stay Red Kansas

For most Americans, Roe vs. Wade is as synonymous with abortion as any other single phrase in the English language. The female behind ‘Roe’ is easily recognizable as the driving force behind abortion’s legalization decades ago.

Because of that, it may come as a surprise to many Kansans where ‘Roe,’ long considered the ultimate abortion supporter, falls in the never-ending Kansas vs. Tiller melodrama.

Norma McCorvey, the previously anonymous ‘Roe,’ has cast her lot with Kansas’ abortion opponents. Last month, McCorvey personally drafted letters to leading Topeka Republicans, encouraging them to continue the ever important struggle against Attorney General Paul Morrison and abortion-on-demand provider George Tiller, his number one supporter.

Posted at 6:08pm on Apr. 5, 2007 KS - 02: Jim Ryun Now Has Competition

By Stay Red Kansas

According to Yesterday's Topeka Capital Journal, Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins has confirmed months of speculation and officially entered the race for Kansas' 2nd District.

Earlier this week, Jenkins filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission that will allow her to begin accepting contributions. While she can still bow out if fundraising doesn't go well, all signs point to a primary showdown between Ryun and Jenkins as it would appear both will stay in the race.

Conveniently, Jenkins waited until right after the 1st quarter filing deadline to declare her candidacy, allowing her to raise the bulk of her campaign's money before the next mid-summer report. In doing so, Jenkins will be able to re-capture the momentum that Ryun is sure to gain when 1st quarter reports are made public on April 15th.

That said, it will be absolutely essential for Jenkins to post solid donor numbers right off the bat. If she doesn't, you can bet that Ryun will.

Also affected by Jenkins' filing are the other two candidates, Lee Tafanelli and Derek Schmidt. Both are moderates and are likely to stay out of the race with Jenkins - the more prominent moderate - officially in.

Stay tuned as www.stayredkansas.com will follow this one through the '08 general.
