Paul Krugman

By Pejman Yousefzadeh
Commenting on Obama's tax raising plans, Paul Krugman writes: "[I]t would push tax rates on some high-income Americans back to the levels of the 1970s." For those of you unfamiliar with Krugman, he meant that as a compliment.

Well, I guess I understand Paul Krugman a whole lot better now.

By Dan McLaughlin
Another pundit weighs in on the risk the Democrats are taking if Obama coasts to the nomination:
[F]aith in Mr. Obama's transformational ability rests on surprisingly little evidence.
Mr. Obama's ability to attract wildly enthusiastic crowds to rallies is a good omen for the general election; so is his ability to raise large sums. But neither necessarily points to a landslide victory.

By Pejman Yousefzadeh
Recall this. Let's see how Krugman has done on the predictability front with his latest article.
First, credit where it is due: There actually is nothing in this article that echoes the "We're heading into a recession (ignore what I've said before -- this time I'm sure)" talking point Krugman traditionally employs. Kudos. It must have been difficult for Krugman to veer from convention and ingrained habit. Let's all give him a round of applause.
Done?
Good. Now on to this.

Dan Drezner wrote a blog post earlier in this young year stating that Paul Krugman's columns are getting a wee bit predictable and that they generally consist of the following points:
We're heading into a recession (ignore what I've said before -- this time I'm sure).
The Republicans are blinkered.
Everything is Alan Greenspan's fault.
I luuuuuv John Edwards.
Barack Obama is not a real progressive.

Can we please start wondering about the standards of journalism that caused Paul Krugman to be hired at The Paper Of Record?
Don't know what I am writing about? Then read this.
And then, after you are done, read this.
And oh, have we mentioned the peace dividend that came about thanks to the Reagan Administration working to help bring the Cold War to a victorious end? Yes, I know that Reagan did not win the Cold War singlehandedly. But he did help win it--the doubts of his many critics notwithstanding.

Tom Maguire on Paul Krugman's efforts to put lipstick on the pig of the European welfare state. Of course, deceit is to Krugman what the fedora and the bullwhip are to Indiana Jones.

At some point, Paul Krugman is going to have to decide what theory he really believes.

By Pejman Yousefzadeh
Does Paul Krugman actually hit the books from time to time? Does he consider any of his arguments in a historical context? Does he wonder at any point whether he is drawing false analogies? And does he know anything about the political process?
It's writing like the kind that Lindsey so rightly skewers that makes me wonder about anyone who praises Krugman's intelligence. Or shall I believe instead that he is as deliberately misleading as he is intelligent?

I predict that Paul Krugman's next column/blog post will be about the subject of this blog post.
I mean, it would have to be, right? Wouldn't want any of those "revealing moments" to pass us by, now would we?

More people are willing to call Paul Krugman on his double-talk. This is a good thing for the viability of Social Security, for policy in general and above all, for political discourse in America. Maybe fewer pundits will try to get away with the kind of flim-flam Krugman has sought to peddle if more Ruth Marcuses are willing to criticize them for it.
