POTUS

Posted at 8:17am on Apr. 22, 2008 It's Earth Day... I'd throw a party but that would waste a lot of electricity

"I think you need to give the Bush administration credit," (Environmentalist Dan) Becker said. "They got one right."

And with that you know the administration got one wrong.  So very, very wrong.

Happy Earth Day everybody.  Make sure you re-use your napkins, get trash in the proper receptacle, recycle everything you can and don't throw away those pop cans today.  You'd better walk through the house and make sure you don't have any lights on in unoccupied rooms and make sure your kids don't use too much water brushing their teeth this morning, too.  Otherwise you're just not cool.  It's as simple as that.

I'm sure Dan Becker would tell you the same thing.  He's pretty proud of the Bush administration today because federal regulators are expected to announce plans today to artificially raise fuel economy standards to 31.6 miles per gallon by 2011.  Says the Ivory Tower:

The standards for vehicles built between 2011 and 2015 are more aggressive than some observers expected, and raise the possibility that the government could require U.S. automakers to meet the 35 m.p.g. target they agreed to last year ahead of the 2020 deadline.

Under the proposal, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will raise fuel economy rules to 35.7 m.p.g. for passenger cars and 28.6 m.p.g. for light trucks.

That requires a substantial shift in applied technology and a bigger sticker price on the car-lot.  Not exactly what Michigan's biggest and chronically struggling industry needs right now.  The sad part, and FREEP acknowledges the point at the conclusion of their article, is that the industry has been moving towards more fuel efficient vehicles already because of market forces.  There's a growing segment of people who would rather drive a tin-can with a one-star crash test rating that gets them 800 miles per gallon than anything heavier or safer the Big 3 can offer.

So why the need for governmental interference?  Why artificially manipulate the marketplace and essentially slap an extra couple thousand dollars on every new vehicle sold by 2011?  Essentially because A) they can and B) Earth Day is cool.  More B than A.  It's just the trendy, hip, "forward-thinking" thing to do.

Another day in Michigan and another round of wretched headlines for Democrats locally. Which is good and bad. With folks like the Hip Hop Mayor down in the D all of the negative coverage comes back and bites us all in the backside. But when you’ve got Democrats tripping over themselves to batter eachother like we continue to see in the Presidential Primary race? Well that’s just plain a beautiful thing. It’s one thing when a member of the opposing party levels a charge but when one of your own people comes with both guns blazing? Look out.

Today is the day... did you vote yet?  Then what are you sitting around reading a blog for?  Go.  Vote.  Forthwith.  Then come back.  I'll wait...

~whistling~

Back?  Awesome.  You may have been one of the first to vote today but you certainly won't be the last.  Early projections vary but all expect the primary election to draw around 1.5 million people.  That's about a 20% voter turnout when you do the math.  In 2000, the last time the State had a presidential primary we drew about 1.4 million so you can do the math on that one.  Of course back then there was only a GOP contest.  And as a group of lawmakers from metro-Detroit continue to point out in the press and via advertising and a grassroots ground game, there is very much a Democrat contest this year as well.

T-Minus 1 day and counting.  At this point just about every Republican in the State has made up his or her mind about who deserves that coveted vote at the ballot box tomorrow and the weekend was full of forecasts and predictions from the press, campaign stops and speeches about Michigan issues by Republicans and crickets chirping from the Democrats.  And all of that will continue today.

Mitt Romney, John McCain and Mike Huckabee will be out and about asking for your vote again today and the MSM will keep calling you to ask who you've decided to vote for.  Oh, right, and the Democrats will keep ignoring you, their own party members, undecided voters, young voters and struggling Michigan families because some fat-cat party bosses chomping on cigars in a cloak room on Capitol Hill told them to.  Sorry, sometimes I forget about them.

Frankly, I'm starting to wonder if they really exist.  I mean, Hillary Clinton, OK.  I'll buy that.  I remember her as the First Lady back in the 90s but this Barack Obama cat?  I've been listening to the liberal media and as best as I can gather he's some sort of genetic experiment that came about when Al Gore invented a machine to mix the DNA of Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy, Ghandi, FDR and the Hindu god Vishnu.  Yes, he's THAT amazing.

Iowa's done.  What's next?  Michigan!  Yeah, yeah, I know.  New Hampshire is actually next, technically.  And you've got to figure in Wyoming and South Carolina.  So maybe we're not "next" but in only eleven days Michigan voters will head to the polls to vote for their choice to be the next leader of the free world.

How much do Michigan Democrats care about Michigan these days?  That's a good question.  And one to which I really don't know the answer.  But I do know that on a scale of one to ten they're somewhere around a negative thirteen.  We've got this whole Presidential Primary debacle in which the leading candidates for the Democrat's nomination have sworn off even stepping foot in Michigan.  A huge two fisted, two fingered salute.

Posted at 8:28am on Dec. 14, 2007 Talk about BRANDING... the Dems keep doing all the work themselves

By RightMichigan.com

A political party or a candidate can spend an entire election cycle trying to brand the opposition on an issue.  One way or another, whatever issue it might be it's difficult work.  There are campaigns that never pull it off and watch their opponents slip by with a Teflon coating.  Others are more successful.  But nothing in this business has ever been as effective as sitting back and letting the opposition brand themselves.

We've seen reports in recent days identifying the Democrat party as the "party of the rich."  Turns out they're the new party of "big business" too?  The Ivory Tower reports this morning that an analysis of campaign finance reports reveals that while overall giving is down in many sectors this Presidential cycle the Democrats seem to be gaining ground in former GOP cash strongholds too while maintaining their hammer lock on givers like the unions and the biggest of them all, the trial lawyers.

Shocking news out of Lansing last night.  The House of Representatives was actually in session and worked late!  Technically.  Oh, sure, they stuck around late into the evening but the what and the why are as perplexing as ever.  The official reason for the late night was a round of voting on Michigan's January 15th joint primary bill.

Posted at 1:33pm on Nov. 21, 2007 BREAKING: Michigan Supreme Court REINSTATES January 15th Primary!!!

By RightMichigan.com

Cross-posted on Right Michigan at www.RightMichigan.com.

Word's coming out of the Michigan Supreme Court as you read this.  The Court has just found, four to three, that the January 15th Primary CAN and WILL go forward!

I wish I could say I wasn't surprised, but I am.  I'm shocked.  And in a very good way.

Democrat House Speaker Andy Dillon and his team did their best to scuttle the whole thing by refusing to move a legislative fix but the said today it wasn't needed, finding that the voter lists which go exclusively to the GOP and Dem State Party operations, the hang-up for the lower courts, helped the major parties advocate for candidates and issues, an "integral" part of democracy.

And now we sit and we wait.  Yesterday the Michigan Republican and Michigan Democrat Parties presented their case before a three-judge panel on the Michigan Court of Appeals arguing that Michigan's joint January 15th Primary should be allowed to go ahead as planned, despite a lower court ruling.  The Lansing State Journal reports:

The judges adjourned the hearing without indicating when they might hand down a ruling, although they said they understood the importance of a speedy decision.

"We're operating on a short string here, and it's not anybody's fault," Judge Patrick Meter said.

That's the official notice from the Michigan Court of Appeals agreeing to hold an emergency hearing on Michigan's January 15th joint primary and to hold it today.  Their decision was one of two items that came along late yesterday afternoon taking us one step away from the "no primary" precipice... unfortunately we're not out of danger just yet.

Posted at 10:07am on Nov. 14, 2007 House Dems abandoned Michigan on the primary issue, but at least they're not raising our taxes... today

By RightMichigan.com

Cross-posted on Right Michigan at www.RightMichigan.com.

Not surprisingly the big focus among insiders in Lansing yesterday and today continues to be the long-shot chance of pulling through with a January 15th joint primary and today is another important day in the process.

Whether the Ingham County Judge had struck down the law establishing the primary or not both the Republican and Democrat parties had November 14th circled on their calendars.  Today is the day by which both the Republicans and the Democrats were / are required to inform the Secretary of State whether or not they will be participating on 1/15.

Remember, it was only a week ago before this court ruling that the assumption among Lansing insiders was that Mark Brewer, a staunch backer of big-labor's candidate, John Edwards, would use today's deadline to yank MDP away from the primary and towards party-only caucuses held in homes and union halls much more easily controlled by his union thugs.

All of a sudden the court steps in, tosses the primary and boom, today's deadline appears a lot more meaningless.  But should the court's decision be overturned, or should the appeals court "stay" the decision, allowing the primary to go forward, what happens today will affect what happens in January.  So what are the party's going to do?  The FREEP reports:

Tuesday, Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis indicated his continuing faith in the primary's prospects by telling the state that the Jan. 15 election would be the party's official presidential selection process. The Democratic Party is expected to make a similar declaration today, which is the deadline for doing so under the law struck down last week.

Now wait a second.... Wait just a second.  It's been abundantly clear this entire time that MRP is determined to have a primary so every Michigan voter has a chance to cast a ballot for the candidate of their choice.  And they haven't removed anyone's name from that ballot, either.  But the state Democrats, they've been scuffling their feet and attempting to obstruct the process this entire time.  And the Associated Press indicates that the contents of their letter to the Secretary of State are actually far from known:

Wednesday was supposed to be the day by which the Michigan Republican and Democratic chairmen had to tell the secretary of state whether they were going to go ahead with the primary or switch to caucuses or party conventions to nominate their presidential favorites. With the law in limbo, that deadline is meaningless.

Nonetheless, state GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis sent a letter to the secretary of state Tuesday saying Republicans plan to choose their national convention delegates through the Jan. 15 presidential primary. The party could hold a Jan. 26 presidential convention if the primary doesn't occur.

Democrats plan to file their own letter Wednesday with the secretary of state, but party spokesman Jason Moon declined to say Tuesday what the letter will contain.

Why wouldn't Moon talk about the letter the day before it's being filed?  There's only one possible reason... they still don't know what it's going to say.  Brewer is working and pushing hard behind the scenes to fortify his anti-primary, pro-Edwards caucus preference but he's getting push back from folks like Carl Levin and Debbie Dingell who've been staunch primary supporters.

Conspicuous by her absence in the entire process is Governor Granholm.

Where does she stand?  What's she asking Mark Brewer to do?  Are they at each other's throats again?  Don't forget, it was Granholm who attempted to fire Brewer after her election in 2002 and succeeded in splitting control of MDP between Mark and her guy, ultra-lefty Butch Hollowell.

My guess is that there are a lot of uneasy moments passing between the chair and the governor right now.

Don't forget... in the end this entire process is little more than a proxy fight for Michigan Democrats.  The Governor wants Hillary Clinton to gain the nomination and with Obama and Edwards yanking their names off the ballot earlier this year a primary would likely go to Hillary in a walk.  Brewer's shilling for Edwards and knows he has the union muscle (literally) to intimidate (literally) caucus attendees into supporting The Haircut.

Caught up in the middle of these ridiculous Democrat games are the Michigan voters.  Millions of us.  But hey, who cares if you disenfranchise millions... no big deal.  Just another day at the office.

Meanwhile team MRP and the Republican field continues to perform admirably working every angle to make the primary happen.  When the Democrats blocked a legislative fix in the Senate and cancelled session this week in the House to avoid the same fix this thing looked dead in the water.  But Saul and the Republicans aren't taking it lying down.  They've got the lawyers working overtime on appeals and requests for a "stay" of the ruling, the AG has filed emergency papers with the courts and they're acting, preparing and filing paperwork to indicate they expect victory.

And that's something Michigan could use a lot of these days.  Just like yesterday, elsewhere in the papers we've got another round of good news / bad news.

The latest foreclosure figures are out and the good news is Michigan's biggest city isn't the worst in the United States.  Nope.  Detroit is second worst.  The AP reports:

The Detroit metro area, which includes Livonia and Dearborn, reported 25,708 filings on 16,079 homes, up more than 93 percent from the same quarter last year. It had the third-highest number of filings during the quarter.

Oh, and speaking of Andy Dillon's decision to close up shop for the week, while that puts a serious, likely fatal cramp in the joint-primary's side there's also an upside.  Without the Democrats in Lansing they can't pass any more tax hikes!  Which is significant, because, lets not forget, they're still trying to spike taxes and fees on Michigan outdoorsmen and just as hunting season gets under way.  According to the Detroit News:

If approved by the Legislature... the fee package would double and triple some hunting, fishing and trapping fees by 2010. As many Michigan deer hunters prepare for opening day, the proposal has become a hot-button issue. Many sportsmen decrying an unfair penalty on one segment of the population; others say they are willing to pony up to support vital programs...

Some members of Michigan's hunting community recognize the need to fund DNR programs and would normally have no problem paying an extra $15 each year. Yet Michigan's stagnant economy and the recent budget squabbles that resulted in proposed tax hikes have many people feeling less than generous these days.

Clement Parke, a 65-year-old hunter from Alanson, near Petoskey, is one of those.

So much for holding a joint primary on January 15th.  While the Democrats in the Senate blocked a new bill re-establishing the primary by refusing to grant the measure immediate effect the House Democrats discovered a new and much more creative way to disenfranchise millions of Michigan voters.
